North And South by Elizabeth Gaskell

Margarets mother has just died, its sad news. But as the Reverend Mother in The Sound of Music said, where there is a door that closes, somewhere a window opens. Enter Thornton.

I'm almost half way through North and South, and really loving it! The dvd of the BBC mini-series is sitting on the bookshelf, urging me to hurry up and finish. Mr Thornton is currently broken hearted and even more determined today to win the heart of our obstinate and lovely Margaret. It's her second proposal in months.

Wolf Hall

I just finished reading "Wolf Hall" by Hillary Mantel. Wow, what a gritty big read.

After watching The Tudors and reading Wolf Hall, I think I'm getting more and more interested in this period of English history. The painting above is by Hans Holbein the Younger. And on top of that is actor James Frain as he is seen playing "The Crom" in the series The Tudors. Ive always thought Frain was great after seeing him in Shadowlands.

Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf

"For she was a child, throwing bread to the ducks, between her parents, and at the same time a grown woman coming to her parents who stood by the lake, holding her life in her arms which, as she neared them, grew larger and larger in her arms, until it became a whole life, a complete life, which she put down by them and said, 'This is what I have mad of it! This!' And what had she made of it?"

A Room With A View by E.M Forster

"Poor Cecil"

"Standing at its brink, like a swimmer who prepares, was the good man. But he was not the good man that she had expected, and he was alone."
